Review
There are three headlight options: halogen, bi-xenon or adaptive front-lighting system (AFS).
For a detailed description of the system construction and operation, refer to Section 417-00, Exterior Lighting, in the Service Station Manual.
Because there is a risk of injury, be sure to follow the following safety precautions.
Safety information
CAUTION: The voltage in xenon headlight systems can reach 28,000 V. Always turn off the headlights before working on them. Failure to follow this instruction may result in injury.
When working with a xenon headlight system, the following precautions must be observed:
1. It is PROHIBITED to carry out any work on the xenon headlight system with the lighting devices on.
2. Work with xenon lamps is only allowed with the use of personal protective equipment, such as gloves and glasses. Do not touch the glass bulb of the lamp.
3. Disposal of xenon lamps must be carried out in accordance with the rules for disposal of hazardous waste.
4. The lamp can only be turned on when it is in the installed position, in the reflector.
Complete instructions for the prescribed repair procedures for the xenon headlamp system are provided in Section 100-00, General Information, Standard Operating Procedures, of the workshop manual.
Inspection and verification
1. Ensure that the customer's complaint is justified.
Please note that intermittent fault messages may be caused by the cycling nature of the field effect transistors (FETs).

2. Visually inspect for obvious mechanical and electrical problems.

3. If an obvious cause for the problem you identified or the customer described is found, resolve it before moving on to further action. (if possible).
4. Use the approved diagnostic system or scan tool to retrieve all diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) before referring to the symptom chart or DTC index.
Since DTCs are stored in more than one module, a full vehicle data read is recommended.
Clear all DTCs after troubleshooting.
