There are three headlight options: halogen, bi-xenon or adaptive front-lighting system (AFS).

For a detailed description of the system construction and operation, refer to Section 417-00, Exterior Lighting, in the Service Station Manual.

Because there is a risk of injury, be sure to follow the following safety precautions.

Safety information


CAUTION: The voltage in xenon headlight systems can reach 28,000 V. Always turn off the headlights before working on them. Failure to follow this instruction may result in injury.


When working with a xenon headlight system, the following precautions must be observed:

1. It is PROHIBITED to carry out any work on the xenon headlight system with the lighting devices on.

2. Work with xenon lamps is only allowed with the use of personal protective equipment, such as gloves and glasses. Do not touch the glass bulb of the lamp.

3. Disposal of xenon lamps must be carried out in accordance with the rules for disposal of hazardous waste.

4. The lamp can only be turned on when it is in the installed position, in the reflector.

Complete instructions for the prescribed repair procedures for the xenon headlamp system are provided in Section 100-00, General Information, Standard Operating Procedures, of the workshop manual.

Inspection and verification


1. Ensure that the customer's complaint is justified.

Please note that intermittent fault messages may be caused by the cycling nature of the field effect transistors (FETs).

  • 3. If an obvious cause for the problem you identified or the customer described is found, resolve it before moving on to further action. (if possible).

    4. Use the approved diagnostic system or scan tool to retrieve all diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) before referring to the symptom chart or DTC index.

    Since DTCs are stored in more than one module, a full vehicle data read is recommended.



    Clear all DTCs after troubleshooting.

Check the operation of the left multifunction switch on the steering column. Refer to the electrical manual. Check for DTCs indicating a malfunction of the headlamp or related electrical circuit.
    Low beam headlight(s) dim / High beam headlight(s) not working
  • Incorrect lamp power
  • The lever for selecting the left-hand or right-hand traffic system is set to the wrong position.
  • Electrical circuit failure
  • The light switch is faulty
  • Left multifunction switch on steering column faulty
  • Check the condition and power of the lamp. Check the correct installation of the left-hand or right-hand drive selector lever. Check the electrical circuits of the headlights. Check the operation of the light switch. Check the operation of the left multifunction switch on the steering column. Refer to the electrical equipment manual.
    Low beam headlight(s) constantly on / High beam headlight(s) constantly on
  • Electrical circuit failure
  • The light switch is faulty
  • Left multifunction switch on steering column faulty
  • The headlight timer function is faulty
  • Check the headlamp circuits. Check the operation of the light switch. Check the operation of the left multifunction switch on the steering column. Check the operation of the headlamp timer function. Refer to the electrical manual. Check for DTCs indicating a malfunction in the headlamp circuit.
    The high/low beam switching function does not work
  • Electrical circuit failure
  • Left multifunction switch on steering column faulty
  • Xenon headlight interrupter mechanism malfunction
  • Check the headlamp circuits. Check the operation of the left multifunction switch on the steering column. Check the operation of the xenon headlamp flasher mechanism. Refer to the electrical manual. Check for DTCs indicating a malfunction in the headlamp circuit.
    The indicator lamp(s) does not work
  • The fuse(s) have blown
  • The light switch is faulty
  • Left multifunction switch on steering column faulty
  • Electrical circuit failure
  • Instrument cluster malfunction
  • Check the fuse(s) (see visual inspection). Check the operation of the light switch. Check the operation of the left multifunction switch on the steering column. Check the electrical circuits of the indicator lamp. Refer to the electrical equipment manual. Check for DTCs indicating a malfunction of the instrument cluster or CAN system.
