Draining and filling coolant and bleeding air 4.4L (Discovery 3)

CAUTION: Never remove the coolant expansion tank cap when the system is hot, as steam or coolant escaping from the cap could cause serious injury, such as a burn.


1. Place the vehicle on a lift.

2. Set the heater controls to maximum.

3. Disconnect the ground wire from the battery.

4. Remove the engine cover. Engine Cover - 4.4L (12.30.50)

CAUTION: Never remove the coolant expansion tank cap when the system is hot, as steam or coolant escaping from the cap could cause serious injury, such as a burn.


Unscrew the expansion tank cap.

6. Remove the left front fender splash guard. Release the 4 clips.

7. Remove the radiator access panel. Remove 4 bolts.

8. Connect the ground wire to the battery.

CAUTION: Coolant can damage paintwork. If coolant is spilled, remove it immediately and rinse the area with water.




Loosen the clamp, remove the lower hose from the radiator pipe and allow the coolant to drain.

10. Remove the spare wheel and tire.
  • Remove the tool kit.
  • Use a lifting mechanism.
11. Install the liquid collection tank.

12. Disconnect the rear heater coolant hoses.
  • Release the 2 clamps.
  • Allow the coolant to drain.

13. Connect the rear heater coolant hoses. Secure the clamps.

14. Install the spare wheel and tire. Install the tool kit.

15. Connect and secure the lower radiator hose. Secure with a clamp.

16. Connect the battery ground wire.

17. Connect the exhaust hoses to the exhaust pipes.

18. Loosen the screw to bleed air from the coolant hose.

19. Loosen the screw to bleed air from the coolant expansion tank.

20. Fill the cooling system to the upper mark of the expansion tank.

21. Start the engine and let it run.
  • Maintain the engine speed at 2500 rpm for 30 s.
  • Let the engine idle for 30 seconds.
  • Repeat the above procedure four more times.
22. When a steady stream of coolant begins to flow from the bleed hole, tighten the coolant hose bleed screw.

23. Fill the cooling system by adding coolant up to the upper mark on the expansion tank until a steady flow of coolant begins to return to the expansion tank. Tighten the expansion tank bleed screw.

NOTE: After bleeding the cooling system and before tightening the expansion tank cap, add coolant to the expansion tank until the level is 30 mm above the upper mark.


Install the coolant expansion tank cap.

25. Let the engine run until the thermostat opens.



26. Turn off the engine and let it cool.

27. Install the engine cover. Engine Cover - 4.4L (12.30.50)

28. If coolant has spilled on the vehicle, remove it.

29. Install the radiator access panel. Tighten the 4 bolts. (tightening torque 10 Nm).

30. Install the left front fender splash guard.

31. Check the coolant level and top up if necessary.
