Rear axle and final drive — description (Discovery 1)

The rear axle beam is welded with a removable hypoid main gear and differential. The rear wheels are driven by fully unloaded half-axles. The wheel hubs are mounted on tapered roller bearings. The main gear is lubricated with transmission oil, and the hub bearings are lubricated with consistent grease. Internal hub seals prevent lubricants from mixing. On models with anti-lock braking system (ABS), sensor gears are mounted on the wheel hubs.
