The Passive Anti-Theft System (PATS - Immobilizer System) provides a secure interface between the CJB, ECM and ABS module, eliminating the possibility of unauthorized engine starting. This is achieved using a remote control with a unique code, as well as through coded data exchange between modules.

Unauthorized engine starting is prevented by blocking the engine crankshaft, fuel system and ignition system.

The passive anti-theft system includes the following elements:
  • Transceiver/remote control
  • CJB
  • ECM
  • Launch Control Module
  • Instrument panel
  • ABS controller
  • Electric steering column lock (if activated)

NOTE: On North American (NAS) vehicles beginning with the 2008 model year (MY), the ability to disable the power steering column lock has been implemented. The change is that the built-in electronics of the lock (Printed Circuit Board (PCB), electric motor, etc.) are removed and the lock is disabled in the vehicle configuration file. The change has been implemented for vehicles with VIN (vehicle identification number) 082896, 085531, 085622, 085685, 085832, 085891, 085942, 085987, 086049, 086081, 086123, 086178, 086276, 086287, 086309, 086363, 086383, 086389, 086398, 086403 and from 091770 onwards.




The system operates automatically and does not require driver intervention. The engine management system only allows the crankshaft to be turned when authorisation data is received from the CJB. The engine starting system is activated by simultaneously pressing the start/stop button and the brake pedal (on vehicles with an automatic transmission) or the clutch pedal (on vehicles with a manual transmission).

The Engine Management System (ECM) will only allow the engine to crank, generate a spark (gasoline models only), and operate the injectors if the following conditions are met:
  • Hardware Park/Neutral Mode Signal (Park/Neutral) comes from the transmission control module (TCM) (only on vehicles with automatic transmission)
  • The ignition hardware signal comes from the CJB
  • The hardware crank request signal comes from the CJB
  • Checks coded data exchange between instrument cluster and ECM

Before the CJB sends a hardware ignition signal, the unit must perform the following operations:
  • Perform coded data exchange with the launch control module to test the remote control

Additionally, before the CJB sends a hardware crank request signal, the unit must receive the following signals:
  • Brake signal from brake switch (automatic transmission) or clutch signal from clutch switch (manual transmission)
  • Hardware transmission of the parking (P) mode signal from the selector lever assembly (automatic transmission only)
