The parking assist module has three connectors that provide power, ground, and CAN connections, as well as front and rear parking assist sensors.
The medium speed CAN bus provides the following information from other systems:
- Anti-Lock Braking System Module (ABS) – speed signal
- transmission control module (TCM) - reverse gear engagement signal
- Trailer module - trailer connected to the vehicle
- Instrument panel - outside temperature signal
The module also issues messages on the medium speed CAN bus, which are received by the integrated control module (ICM). The ICM processes these messages and converts them into MOST signals (Media Orientated System Transport), that are sent to the power amplifier of the audio system.
These signals are then used by the power amplifier to emit appropriate warning signals from the front or rear speakers when an object is detected by the front or rear park assist sensors. A warning signal may also be emitted to alert the driver to a malfunction in the parking assist system.
The parking aid module runs self-test routines and, when the parking aid system is active, checks the sensor wiring for shorts or open circuits. If a fault is registered, a fault code is stored in the module's memory and, if necessary, any of the front and/or rear sensors can be disabled.
The driver is aware of the malfunction by flashing the LED in the system switch and a continuous warning tone emitted for 3 seconds instead of the normal short beeps when the system is operating normally. Fault codes can be read via the diagnostic connector using the integrated diagnostic system (IDS).
