The TD4_e features Land Rover's first intelligent Stop/Start system. The system automatically switches off and restarts the vehicle's engine when certain conditions are met. This reduces the time the engine spends idling, reducing fuel consumption and emissions. This is particularly useful for vehicles that spend a lot of time in slow-moving conditions, such as:
  • waiting at traffic lights
  • frequent stops in traffic jams

The advantages of this technology compared to the previous TD4 vehicle without Stop/Start, based on the official definition of the "European Driving Cycle", are as follows:
  • CO₂ emissions are reduced by almost 8 percent compared to the standard EU4 driving cycle, corresponding to a reduction of 15 g/km.
  • Fuel consumption has been reduced by 3.8 mpg or 0.6 L per 62 miles/100 km.

NOTE: Fuel economy and emission reductions vary depending on driving style and road conditions.




The Stop/Start system is standard on vehicles with a manual transmission. It is automatically activated each time the ignition is turned on. However, the driver can deactivate the system by pressing the Eco button on the control panel.

NOTE: In addition to the automatic Stop/Start system, the Eco button also controls the gear shift indicator system.

When the LED in the "Eco" button lights up, it indicates that the Stop/Start system is working properly. The LED goes out in the following cases:
  • The driver switches off the Stop/Start system.
  • HDC (Hill Descent Control) or TR system is in operation (Terrain Response).
  • The system is faulty; for more information, please see the System Malfunction section below.

New software has been added to the ECM (engine control module) to control the automatic Stop/Start system, because in addition to its own components, the automatic Stop/Start system is linked to many other systems in the vehicle. Complex technology connects these systems and ensures that all necessary conditions are met, monitoring, among other things, the following parameters:


  • clutch pedal position
  • gear selector position
  • speed of movement condition of the most important systems of the car
  • environmental conditions

If all necessary conditions are met, the Stop/Start system automatically switches off the engine in the following cases:
  • the car is stationary
  • neutral is on
  • the clutch pedal is fully depressed

Engine shutdown is indicated by the Eco icon on the instrument panel illuminating. Other warnings normally associated with engine shutdown (such as ignition and low oil pressure indicators) are disabled so that they do not come on when the engine is switched off in Stop/Start mode.

The engine will automatically restart when the clutch pedal is released before engaging a gear. At this point, the Eco icon on the instrument cluster will go out. If the conditions required for the system to operate have not been checked by the ECM, the Stop/Start system will not operate as expected, for example:
  • System lock: the engine will continue to run even if the vehicle is stationary, the gear is in neutral and the clutch pedal is fully depressed.
  • System Bypass: The engine is switched off by the Stop/Start system, but conditions have changed and this will cause the engine to automatically restart earlier.

This intervention prevents the Stop/Start system from having a negative impact on the following:


  • vehicle and passenger safety
  • driver requests
  • driver and passenger comfort
  • on-road and off-road capabilities of the car

Although the main logic for controlling the Stop/Start system is located in the ECM, the CJB (Central Junction Box) has also received updated software to transmit engine shutdown interlock signals to the ECM. In some cases, depending on the reason for the system intervention, a reason message will be displayed on the message center screen. For more information, see the message table below.

Conditions that affect the operation of the automatic Stop/Start system are described further in the section "Stop Interlocks, Start Activators and Start Interlocks".

WARNING: To avoid injury during vehicle repairs, be sure to turn off the automatic Stop system./Start" by pressing the"ECO" button"; make sure that the message "Stop/Start system off" is displayed on the information panel and the ECO indicator in the switch is off.
