For the clutch to function properly, the following conditions must be met:
  • a) the primary shaft of the gearbox must rotate freely in the crankshaft bearing
  • b) the driven clutch disc must move freely along the splines of the primary shaft
  • c) the driven clutch disc must be smooth and clean. Oiling of the disc causes clutch slippage.

Clutch operation defects are divided into:
  • a) The clutch does not disengage - when you press the clutch pedal, gear shifting occurs with a grinding noise (incomplete clutch disengagement). When the clutch is depressed again, the gear is engaged quietly.
  • b) Slippage - usually observed when driving uphill or on a road with a soft surface. The engine picks up speed without increasing the vehicle's speed.
  • c) Slippage is practically the same as sliding, and is observed during straight-line movement. The car jerks spontaneously, poor control when engaging the clutch.

A combination of faults is possible depending on driving conditions and ambient temperature.

Clutch noises - mechanical causes



Symptom: Noise that disappears when the clutch is disengaged (Gearbox in neutral position).

Reason: gearbox input shaft bearing, gearbox defect.

Symptom: Noise that changes tone when disengaging the clutch (Gearbox in neutral position).

Reason: clutch release bearing.

Symptom: Impact noise that decreases or disappears when the clutch is released (Gearbox in neutral position).

Reason: wear of the release bearing lever or loosening of its fastening.

Clutch noises - hydraulic causes



Symptom: no resistance to clutch pedal movement, clutch does not disengage.

1. Check the fluid level in the clutch master cylinder reservoir.

2. Make sure there are no working fluid leaks.

3. Check the condition of the ventilation hole in the tank lid. The master cylinder may be faulty.

Symptom: weak resistance to pedal movement ("soft" pedal).

1. Check the fluid level in the clutch master cylinder reservoir.

2. Check the condition of the ventilation hole in the tank lid. There may be air in the system.

Symptom: clutch disengages with difficulty, delay in re-engaging.

1. Check the fluid level in the clutch master cylinder reservoir.

2. Check the condition of the ventilation hole in the tank lid. The pedal axle, master cylinder or cylinder bushing may be jammed.
