General information
Each rear brake includes a single-piston caliper, ventilated brake disc and dust shield (being part of the parking brake). Models with the 4.4L engine have a different caliper and a larger diameter brake disc compared to models with 4.0L and 2.7L diesel engines. The dust shield and parking brake are the same design for all modifications.
The brake caliper is mounted to the rear of the rear knuckle. The brake pads are made of asbestos-free material. A wear sensor is installed on the inner brake pad of the right rear brake.

When hydraulic pressure is applied to the caliper, the piston extends and presses the inner pad against the disc. This causes the caliper body to slide along the guide pins, bringing the outer pad into contact with the disc.
The front and rear brake pad wear sensors are connected in series and connected between the instrument cluster and ground. When the brake pad wear sensor reaches approximately 75%, the brake pad wear sensor opens the circuit. When the instrument cluster detects an open circuit, it turns on the yellow LED of the brake system indicator lamp. If the vehicle has a high-level instrument cluster, a corresponding message is also displayed in the message center display and an audible signal sounds. For more information, refer to Instrument Cluster (413-01 Instrument Cluster).
At the beginning of each ignition cycle, the instrument cluster performs a check of the lamps and the brake system indicator lamp: The lamp glows yellow for 1.5 s, then red for 1.5 s.
