General information
Each front brake includes a dual-piston brake caliper, ventilated brake disc and dust shield. Models with the 4.4L engine have a different caliper and larger brake disc compared to the 4.0L and 2.7L diesel models. The dust shield is the same on all modifications.
The brake caliper is attached to the back of the front knuckle. The brake pads are made of asbestos-free material. A wear sensor is installed on the inner brake pad of the left front brake.
When hydraulic pressure is applied to the caliper, the pistons extend and press the inner pad against the disc. As a result of this, the caliper body moves along the guide pins, bringing the outer pad into contact with the disc.
The front and rear brake pad wear sensors are connected in series and connected between the instrument panel and ground. When the brake pad wear by the wear sensor reaches approximately 75%, the brake pad wear sensor opens the circuit. When the instrument panel detects an open circuit, it illuminates the yellow brake warning light LED. If the vehicle has a high-level instrument panel, a corresponding message is also displayed on the message center display and an audible signal sounds. For more information refer to Instrument Cluster (413-01 Instrument Cluster).
At the beginning of each ignition cycle, the instrument panel performs a lamp and brake warning lamp test: The lamp illuminates yellow for 1.5 seconds, then red for 1.5 seconds, and then turns off.
