Multi-plate clutch assembly center differential (transfer box) and the electronically controlled rear differential operate on the same principle. The multi-plate clutch assembly prevents excessive differential slip and therefore maximizes vehicle traction. This is fundamentally different from anti-slip control with braking, in which it is only possible to neutralize differential slip when the latter occurs.
A certain slip of the differential is necessary when cornering. It enables the vehicle to maintain stability when operating the anti-lock braking system (ABS). The transfer case control module receives commands generated by the driver using the vehicle's main controls and automatically sets the required rear differential slip torque using the electronic rear differential control unit. The system is fully automated and does not require any special actions from the driver.
The multi-plate clutch assembly actively manages the transmission of torque through the rear differential and optimizes torque distribution in the driveline. The clutch redistributes the torque of the differential to the wheels with more grip and prevents the wheels with less grip from spinning.
The rotation of the input drive disk is transmitted to the output drive by means of the motor shaft. This movement acts on the 5 balls of the rack and pinion between the input and output drives, causing a certain axial displacement. The axial displacement causes the pressure plate to create friction between the sun gear and the differential case by means of the clutch plates supported by the sun gear and the plates supported by the clutch case on the differential case. The friction force prevents the rotation of the differential, as a result of which the differential housing and the left side gear of the differential are blocked.
