Multi-plate clutches in the center differential assembly (transfer case) and the electronically controlled rear differential operate on the same principle. The multi-plate clutch assembly prevents excessive differential slippage and, as a result, maximizes the vehicle's traction. This is fundamentally different from traction control with braking, which can only neutralize differential slippage when it occurs.
A certain amount of differential slip is necessary when cornering. It enables the vehicle to maintain stability when operating the anti-lock braking system (ABS). The transfer case control module receives commands generated by the driver using the vehicle's main controls and automatically sets the required rear differential slip moment using the rear differential electronic control unit. The system is fully automated and does not require any special actions from the driver.
The multi-plate clutch assembly actively controls the transmission of torque through the rear differential and optimizes the distribution of torque in the driveshaft. The clutch redistributes the torque of the differential to the wheels with greater traction and prevents wheels with less traction from slipping.
The rotation of the input drive disk is transmitted to the output drive by the electric motor shaft. This movement acts on the 5 balls of the rack and pinion mechanism between the input and output drives, causing a certain axial displacement. The axial displacement causes the pressure plate to create friction between the sun gear and the differential housing due to the clutch discs supported by the sun gear and the discs supported by the clutch housing on the differential housing. The friction force prevents the rotation of the differential, as a result of which the differential housing and the left half-axle gear of the differential are locked.
