Rotary contactor of the airbag system (Freelander 1)

Dismantling

CAUTION: Do not perform any work on the SRS system until you have read the relevant sections of this Manual.

1. Follow all safety rules when working with the airbag system.

CAUTION: Before disconnecting the steering components, set the wheels to the straight-ahead position and lock the steering wheel. Turning the steering wheel will damage the SRS rotary switch.

2. Remove the steering wheel.

CAUTION: After removing the steering wheel, fix the rotary contactor with adhesive tape.

3. Remove the upper and lower parts of the steering column cover.

4. Disconnect the 2 electrical connectors from the rotary contactor assembly.

5. Unscrew 4 screws and remove the rotary contactor.

CAUTION: Do not disassemble the rotary contactor. It is a non-serviceable component and must be replaced as a single unit.

Installation

1. Make sure the rotary contactor is set to the center position. To set the rotary contactor to the center position, gently turn it clockwise or counterclockwise until a white segment appears on the indicator wheel.

CAUTION: Make sure the front wheels are in the straight ahead position.

2. Install the rotary contactor and fix it with screws.

3. Connect the electrical connectors to the rotary contactor.

4. Install the upper and lower steering column covers.
