Inspection and verification
1. Make sure the customer's complaint is valid.
2. Visually inspect for obvious mechanical and electrical problems.
Mechanical factors | Electrical Factors |
3. If there is an obvious cause for the problem you identified or the customer described, fix it before proceeding with the next steps (if possible).
4. Use an approved diagnostic system or scan tool (tester), to retrieve all diagnostic trouble codes before referring to the symptom table or dTc index (DTC).
Clear all DTCs after troubleshooting.
Symptom table
Symptom | Possible reasons | Actions |
Engine cranks but won't start | Check if the inertial switch is activated. Check fuel level/condition. Check the air intake system for leaks. Check fuel pump module operation, check fuel system low pressure circuit for leaks/damage. Check fuel filter, check VCV and FPCV. Check high pressure fuel pump. Refer to the relevant section in the workshop manual. Check the electrical circuits of the CKP sensor. Refer to the electrical manual. If a module is suspected, refer to the warranty policy and procedures manual.
Difficulty starting | Check the glow plug circuits. Check fuel level/condition. Check the air intake system for leaks. Check fuel pump module operation, check fuel system low pressure circuit for leaks/damage. Check fuel filter, check VCV and FPCV. EGR valve checks are described in the appropriate section of the workshop manual.
Uneven idle operation | Check the air intake system for leaks. Check fuel level/condition. Check the fuel system low pressure circuit for leaks/damage. Check the fuel filter, check the VCV, FPCV and EGR valve, refer to the relevant section of the workshop manual for information on checks.
Loss of power on acceleration | Check the air intake system. Check the exhaust system for leaks or blockages. If necessary, install new components and parts. Check the pressure in the fuel system. EGR valve and VGT actuator checks are described in the relevant section of the workshop manual.
Engine stops/stops | Check the air intake system for leaks. Check fuel level/condition. Check the fuel system for leaks/damage. Check fuel system for leaks, check VCV and FPCV. EGR valve checks are described in the appropriate section of the workshop manual.
Engine jerking | Check fuel level/condition. Check the air intake system for leaks. Check the fuel system low pressure circuit for leaks/damage. Check high pressure fuel system for leaks, check VCV and FPCv. Check high pressure fuel pump. Refer to the relevant section in the workshop manual.
Excessive fuel consumption | Check the fuel system low pressure circuit for leaks/damage. Check VCV and FPCV, fuel temperature sensor, high pressure fuel pump, etc. for leaks. Refer to the relevant section in the workshop manual. Check for injector DTCs. EGR valve checks are described in the appropriate section of the workshop manual. |
