Steering wheel lock mechanism and ignition switch (Freelander 1)

Dismantling

1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal.

2. Remove the key from the ignition switch.

3. Remove the upper and lower parts of the steering column cover.

4. Disconnect the multi-pin electrical connectors from the ignition switch and immobilizer coil.

5. Remove the immobilizer coil.

6. Unscrew the 2 ignition switch mounting screws and remove the switch.

7. To gain access to the steering wheel lock mechanism mounting bolts, move the rubber steering column cover to the side.

8. Tighten both steering wheel lock mechanism mounting bolts.

9. Drill out both bolts securing the steering wheel lock mechanism.

10. Remove the steering wheel lock mechanism support and remove the lock mechanism.

11. Models with automatic transmission: Loosen and disconnect the ignition lock cable from the steering column.

Installation

1. Models with automatic transmission: Connect the ignition lock cable to the steering column and tighten it to a torque of 4 Nm.

2. Install the steering wheel lock mechanism onto the steering column and tighten the shear bolts. Do not tighten the shear bolts completely yet.

3. Insert the ignition key, check the functionality of the steering wheel lock mechanism and make sure that the key turns without jamming.

4. Make sure the ignition lock cable is functioning properly.

5. Remove the ignition key.

6. Tighten the shear bolts completely and cut off their heads.

7. Install the ignition switch on the steering column, screw in and tighten the screws that secure it.

8. Install the immobilizer coil.

9. Connect the multi-pin electrical connectors to the ignition switch and immobilizer coil.

10. Models with automatic transmission: Check that the micro switch is working properly.

11. Install the overlay.

12. Install the upper and lower steering column housing parts.
