Protective cover for steering gear (Freelander 1)

Dismantling

1. Remove the steering gear.

STEERING, REPAIR WORK, Steering gear.

2. While holding the steering gear firmly, remove the 2 Torx head bolts that secure the tie rods. Discard the bolts.

3. Remove the lock plate.

4. Remove the steering rods and spacer bushings.

CAUTION: Before disassembling, note the orientation of the spacer bushings.

5. Remove the clamps from the steering gear pipes.

6. Loosen the 4 couplings and remove both pipes.

CAUTION: Always plug the fittings and holes to protect the system from dirt.

7. Loosen the bolt securing the bracket supporting the pipeline and remove the bracket.

8. Remove the 2 clamps securing the protective cover.

9. Remove the sealing ring from the protective cover.

10. Remove the protective cover.

11. Remove the sealing belt from the protective cover.

12. Remove the guide bushing and clamp assembly.

13. Remove the clamp from the guide sleeve.

Installation

1. Wipe the guide bushing and clamp clean and remove any grease.

2. Place the clamp on the bushing and install them on the steering gear.

3. Lubricate the protruding part of the rack shaft, guide sleeve and clamp with the grease included in the protective cover kit.

4. Replace the protective cover sealing belt.

5. Install the protective cover.

6. Install the protective cover sealing ring.

7. Align the protective boot with the guide bushing to ensure the correct position of the latter. Screw in the steering rod mounting bolts to secure the protective boot. Do not tighten the bolts.

CAUTION: Do not tighten the bolts more than 4-5 turns.

8. After making sure that the protective cover is not twisted, secure it with clamps.

9. Install the bracket supporting the pipeline and tighten the bolt that secures it.

10. Clean the pipe couplings and fittings on the steering gear housing.

11. Connect both pipes and tighten the smaller diameter couplings to 18 Nm and the larger diameter couplings to 24 Nm.

12. Install clamps on the pipes.

13. Unscrew the steering rod mounting bolts that were used to secure the protective cover. Install the spacer bushings and lock plate on the steering gear.
