Note: The upper part of the steering column is not serviceable. Please read the warnings section "Steering cardan shaft".


Removal



1. Remove the steering wheel. Secure the current collector with adhesive tape.

2. Remove the driver's side access panel.

3. Remove the steering column covers.

4. Remove the current collector, see section "Passive safety system".

5. If installed: unscrew the 4 screws securing the steering column breaker assembly and remove the assembly.

6. Disconnect the combination switch connector.

7. Disconnect the ignition switch connector from the fuse box.



7. Disconnect the ignition switch connector from the fuse box.


8. Disconnect the main ignition switch connector.

9. Unscrew the 4 nuts securing the upper part of the steering column to the lower support.

10. Unscrew the 2 nuts securing the support post and remove the post.

11. Loosen the upper cardan joint mounting bolt of the steering shaft.

11. Loosen the upper cardan joint mounting bolt of the steering shaft.


12. Unscrew the 4 nuts securing the upper part of the steering column to the upper support.



13. Carefully lift the steering column off the floor. Further operations are carried out as necessary.

14. Loosen the combination switch mounting screws and move the switch until the connectors are accessible.

15. Disconnect the switch connectors and remove the switch.

16. Disconnect the ignition switch connector.

17. Remove the bolts (with a cut-off head) steering column lock fasteners, Remove the lock and seat. Discard the bolts (see section "Steering column lock").

18. Pull out the lamp base.

19. Move the parts to the new column.

Note: Do not tighten the column lock bolts until the heads shear off at this stage.


Installation



20. Install the steering column in place, engage the splines of the shaft and the upper universal joint of the steering shaft, install the rubber boot.



21. Hand tighten the upper universal joint bolt.

22. Screw the nuts securing the column to the upper support.

23. Screw the nuts securing the column to the lower support.

24. Install the support post and tighten the mounting nuts.

25. Check the installation of the steering column.

26. Tighten the mounting bolts and nuts to 22 Nm.

27. Tighten the universal joint bolt to 25 Nm.

28. Reinstall the removed parts.
