Note: This test is only valid for tires recommended for installation on the vehicle.
Before checking
1. Check tire pressure.
2. Check the condition of the tire tread.
3. Make sure that the same type of tires are installed on one axle.
4. Check the condition of the wheel rims.
Examination
Please note: the inspection must be carried out by an experienced driver in compliance with traffic regulations.
1. While driving at 16 km/h on a level road, turn the steering wheel 90 degrees and release: the steering wheel should almost return to the straight-ahead position (slight steering wheel adjustments by the driver are permitted).
2. When driving at 64 km/h on a level road, release the steering wheel: the car should continue to move straight ahead without any tendency to drift (the possibility of movement along a large radius arc is allowed).
3. When driving at a speed of 112 km/h (or with the maximum allowed by the rules) on a level road, change lanes; the car should move straight in the new lane.
4. When driving at 96 km/h: apply moderate braking force: the car should maintain straight-line movement.
5. When driving at 96 km/h: apply full braking force and observe the vehicle's trajectory. If drift is observed, check the running drums and check the turning forces.
Checking the steering gear forces
1. Raise both steering wheels.
2. Remove the steering wheel cover or airbag unit. With the engine off, turn the steering wheel using a torque wrench on the steering wheel mounting nut.
Normally the torque should be equal to:
without ABS - 4.4 Nm
with ABS - 4.65 Nm
3. If the turning force (torque) is greater than specified, check the steering gear adjustment, see below
Adjusting the steering gear reaction rod
1. Loosen the three tie rod mounting bolts by one turn.
2. While rolling the vehicle, turn the wheels from lock to lock in both directions.
3. Before completing procedure p.2, the vehicle must have a flat and straight road in front of it.
4. Tighten the Panhard rod mounting nut to a torque of 110 N·m.
5. Tighten the two steering gear torque rod mounting bolts to 81 N·m.
6. Recheck the steering effort. If the force remains greater than the norm, check the lubrication of the steering column universal joints and the installation of the steering column. Check the steering knuckle preload: after disconnecting the steering from the knuckle, the steering wheel turning force should be:
- with ABS-2.0-2.8 Nm
- without ABS -1.16-1.46 kgf.
Checking the steering column installation
1. Place the vehicle on a level surface. Measure the angle of the steering gear driveshaft between both joints. The angle must be at least 12 degrees.
2. If adjustment is necessary, loosen the 5 steering column mounting bolts, install the column as required, tighten the mounting bolts to a torque of 27 N·m.
3. Loosen and retighten the steering column cover screws.
