Steering cardan shaft (Discovery 1)

Attention:
  • 1. Before disconnecting any steering component, set the steering wheels to the straight-ahead position. To avoid damaging the steering column current collector, remove the steering wheel.
  • 2. After carrying out repair work, make sure that the relative position of the steering gear wheels and the steering wheel is correct. When installing the steering wheel, make sure that the current collector and steering wheel are properly engaged.

1. Set the steering wheels to the straight-ahead position.

2. Loosen the upper cardan joint mounting bolt.

3. Remove the two lower cardan joint mounting bolts.

4. Pull the shaft out of the steering gear splines.

5. Remove the lower universal joint.

Note: Do not disassemble the upper universal joint assembly. The new shaft is supplied assembled with a rubber coupling and a universal joint.


6. Check the condition of the lower universal joint - replace if necessary.

7. Check the condition of the upper universal joint and rubber coupling. Replace the shaft assembly if necessary.

8. Lubricate the cardan joints.

9. Loosen the heat shield mounting studs (if installed).

10. Make sure the red indicator clip is located under the shock absorber head. If the clip is displaced, replace the shaft assembly; do not try to reinstall the clip.

11. Installation is carried out in reverse order, the tightening torque of the universal joint bolts is 25 Nm.
