Never install seals that have been improperly stored or show signs of rough handling.

Remove old seals with great care to avoid damaging the contact surfaces and seal housing.

Before installation, carefully inspect the seal to ensure it is clean and intact.

The surface on which the sealing lip will operate and the seal body must be smooth, without scratches or burrs. The part mating with the cuff must be replaced if its surface on which the sealing occurs does not meet this requirement.

Special tools and protective bushings have been developed for the installation of most types of seals; they should be used whenever indicated.

Most seals today have a protective wax coating and DO NOT require lubrication prior to installation. Always check that the appropriate repair procedure specifies that the seal should be installed dry. Never handle such seals with oily hands as the oil will contaminate the protective coating, which will adversely affect the seal's performance; in addition, make sure that the fastening tool and the safety bushings are free of oil and grease. Seals that require lubrication before installation must be lubricated with the lubricant specified in the repair procedure in the designated areas.

Make sure that the seal is installed correctly. For example, the sealing lip should be facing the direction from which liquid should not leak.

When pressing in the seal, make sure that it is not skewed relative to the shaft and housing. In some cases, it is advisable to first press the seal into the housing and then install the shaft. Do not allow the seal to bear the weight of the shaft.
