Removal
All cars
1. Disconnect the ground cable from the battery. For more information, refer to Specification
2. Remove the exhaust system. For more information, refer to Exhaust System (10/30/08)
3. Remove the fender splash guard. For more information, refer to Fender Splash Guard (76.10.48)

NOTE: The heat shield consists of three parts.
To gain access, remove the upper control arm and brake line heat shields.
- Unscrew 3 nuts.
- Remove 3 bolts.

Left-hand drive vehicles
5. Make sure the wheels are in the straight-ahead position, and then remove the steering column universal joint upper clamp bolt. Discard the mounting bolt.
6. Release the upper steering column shaft fastening.
7. Remove the steering column universal joint clamp bolt. Discard the mounting bolt.
8. Release the fastening and remove the shaft assembly with the joint.

All cars

CAUTION: Failure to perform this operation may result in stress cracking of the EGR tube.
Disconnect the exhaust manifold flange to which the EGR pipe is attached.
- Unscrew 2 nuts.
- Discard the seal.
- Loosen, but do not completely remove, the 2 bolts that secure the EGR pipe to the EGR valve.

10. Remove the exhaust manifold.
- Remove 8 bolts.
- Assemble the spacers and discard the bolts.
- Remove the gasket/heat shield mounting bolt.
- Discard the gasket/heat shield.

Installation
All cars
1. Clean the contact surfaces of the parts.
2. Install the exhaust manifold.
- Install the gasket/heat shield.
- Tighten the heat shield bolt (tightening torque 25 Nm).
- Screw in and tighten the bolts slightly.
- Tighten the bolts evenly and gradually in the sequence shown to a torque of 20 Nm.

3. Connect the EGR pipe and exhaust manifold flanges.
- Install a new gasket.
- Tighten the nuts (tightening torque 25 Nm).
- Tighten the bolts (tightening torque 25 Nm).
4. Install the lower steering column universal joint assembly.
- Clean the contact surfaces of the parts.
- Install and tighten new capped bolts. (tightening torque 25 Nm).
NOTE: The heat shield consists of three parts.
Install the upper control arm and brake line heat shields.
- Screw in the bolts.
- Tighten the nuts.
7. Install the exhaust system. For more information, refer to Exhaust System (10/30/08)
8. Connect the ground wire to the battery.
