Central locking system - manual control
The central locking system has two to three manual locking modes, depending on vehicle specification. The locking modes are activated using the central locking switches on the instrument panel, the central locking/unlocking buttons on the front door, or the locking/unlocking buttons on the remote control:
- Internal locking mode
- External locking mode
- Double lock mode (for all models except North America, Japan, and Gulf of Mexico)
When the vehicle is locked from the outside, the CJB activates a single flash of the direction indicators for 250 milliseconds. When the vehicle is double locked, the CJB will activate the turn signals to flash twice for 250 milliseconds, with a pause of 250 milliseconds. When the vehicle is unlocked using the remote control, the CJB will activate the turn signal indicators to flash twice for 250 milliseconds with a pause of 250 milliseconds.
The remote control can be configured by the driver to open one door or to open the whole door by simultaneously pressing the lock and unlock buttons on the remote control for 4 seconds. To change modes, the vehicle must be unlocked and the remote control must have been removed from the launch control module shortly before. As confirmation of the mode change, the direction indicators will flash twice with a duration of 250 milliseconds and a pause of 250 milliseconds between flashes. The vehicle will be locked and then unlocked in the selected mode.
If single door unlock mode is enabled, the unlock command from the remote control will unlock only the driver's door, liftgate, and fuel filler cap. Unlocking the remaining doors requires a second command from the remote control or pressing the centralized unlocking switch on the instrument panel.
In addition, the locking while driving mode and the auto-relocking mode can be configured by the dealer. All models have an automatic unlocking mode in case of a collision.
Internal locking mode
The interior locking mode is activated by pressing the central locking switch on the instrument panel once, or by pressing the central locking/unlocking button on one of the front doors once. When in internal locking mode:
- The outside door handles disengage from the door latches to prevent the vehicle from being opened from the outside.
- The CJB ignores the open request from the liftgate outside handle to prevent the liftgate from being opened from the outside.
- The vehicle can be unlocked by pressing the central unlocking switch on the instrument panel once, by pulling out the central locking/unlocking button on one of the front doors, or by pressing the unlock button on the remote control once. The car will also be unlocked if the driver's or front passenger's door is opened.
External locking mode
External locking mode is activated by pressing the lock button on the remote control once. When in external locking mode:
- The outside door handles disengage from the door latches to prevent the vehicle from being opened from the outside.
- To prevent the liftgate and side doors from being opened from the outside, the CJB ignores an open request from the liftgate outside handle or the instrument panel central locking switches.
- The filler cap actuator locks the filler cap.
- The car can be unlocked by pressing the unlock button on the remote control once.
Double lock mode
The double lock mode is activated by pressing the lock button on the remote control twice within 3 seconds. When in double lock mode:
- The inside and outside door handles disengage from the door latches to prevent the vehicle from being opened from the inside or outside.
- The filler cap actuator locks the filler cap.
- To prevent the liftgate and side doors from opening, the CJB ignores the open request from the liftgate outside handle and the instrument panel central locking switches.
- The car can be unlocked by pressing the unlock button on the remote control once.
On vehicles destined for the UK, Europe and the rest of the world, a single press of the lock button on the remote control will lock the vehicle from the outside (the outside door handles will be detached from the latches) and activates the active anti-theft system. For more information, see the chapter: Anti-theft system - active (419-01A Anti-theft system - active, Description and principle of operation).
On North American, Japan, and Gulf of Mexico vehicles, pressing the lock button on the remote control once will lock the vehicle from the outside (the outside door handles will be detached from the latches) and activates the active and passive anti-theft system. For more information, see the chapter: Anti-theft system - active (419-01A Anti-theft system - active, Description and principle of operation), Anti-Theft - Passive (419-01 Anti-Theft - Passive, Description and principle of operation).
On all vehicles except North American, Japan and Gulf of Mexico vehicles, pressing the lock button on the remote control twice within 3 seconds will double lock the vehicle (the inside and outside door handles will be detached from the latches) and activates the active and passive anti-theft system. For more information, see the chapter: Anti-theft system - active (419-01A Anti-theft system - active, Description and principle of operation), Anti-Theft - Passive (419-01 Anti-Theft - Passive, Description and principle of operation).
Central locking system - automatic modes
The central locking system has automatic modes that allow you to control entry points to the car and ensure the protection of system elements.
The central locking system includes the following automatic modes:
- Error lock mode
- Locking mode while driving (if programmed)
- Collision unlock mode
- Reclosing lockout mode
- Protection mode against locking the car when the doors are open
- Auto relock mode (if programmed)
- Transport mode
Error lock mode
The CJB detects a locking error if any door or hood is not closed when an external lock or double lock is requested. To indicate a locking error, the CJB activates an audible signal that emits "squeak" 100 milliseconds long.
If a locking error occurs due to an external locking request made with the door or hood open, the CJB will not execute the locking request for any of the doors.
Locking mode while driving
If the lock while driving function is activated, the CJB locks all doors from the inside at a speed of at least 8 km/h (5 mph), with all doors closed and with the engine running. If the driver's or front passenger's door opens and then closes when the vehicle slows down or stops and then accelerates again above 8 km/h (5 mph), CJB lock from inside all doors.
The lock-while-driving mode can be enabled or disabled by the dealer using the Land Rover approved diagnostic system.
Collision unlock mode
If the ignition is in power mode 6 (ignition), in the event of a collision that deployed the airbags, the CJB will unlock all doors. Collision details (message «no collision» is replaced by the message «collision») enter the CJB from the driver and passenger protection system control unit (RCM) over the medium speed CAN bus.
The central locking system will unlock in a collision and if the message "no collision" will not come from the RCM every 500ms. For more information, see chapter: Airbag and Pretensioner Restraint System (SRS) (501-20B Secondary Restraint System Description and Operation).
Reclosing lockout mode
In order to protect the motors and actuators of the central locking system from being overstressed, the CJB has a built-in anti-reclosing function that limits the maximum frequency of operation of each motor and actuator. The electric motors for locking the locks of all doors are also protected by a thermal relay.
Operating characteristics of electric motors and actuators of the central locking system:
Electric motor or actuator | On duration (ms) | Maximum number of starts (in a minute) | Rated current (A) | Stall current (A) |
Luggage compartment lifting door latch | 600 ± 10 | 10 | from 3.6 to 5.2 | 7,5 |
Fuel tank filler cap | 700 ± 10 | 5 | 2,7 | 8 |
Double door lock | from 100 to 110 | 10 | 0,28 | 1,14 |
Locking the door | from 100 to 110 | 10 | 0,54 | 3,31 |
Protection mode against locking the car when the doors are open
If one of the doors is open, the vehicle cannot be locked using the central locking button on one of the front doors or the central locking switch on the instrument panel.
When an interior locking request is received from the central locking button on one of the front doors, the CJB will centrally lock the vehicle and then centrally unlock the vehicle if one of the doors is open.
If the front door is open and the central locking button on the open door is pressed and held in the locked position, the open front door may remain locked. The next time the open door is closed, the CJB will centrally unlock all doors.
Auto relock mode
Automatic re-locking prevents accidental pressing of remote control buttons that could unlock and deactivate the car's anti-theft system.
If no door is opened within 1 minute after unlocking the central locking system with the remote control (including liftgate) or the remote control has not been installed in the launch control unit, the CJB will automatically lock or double lock the vehicle depending on the previously selected mode.
Transport mode
All new cars shipped from the manufacturer are in transport mode. Transport mode replaces the traditional transport relay and deactivates a number of electrical systems and functions to reduce battery static discharge while in transit. When the vehicle is in transport mode, 'transp' appears on the instrument cluster odometer. The single door unlock mode is activated, while the general locking and remote unlocking modes are deactivated.
The lock-while-driving mode is also deactivated, but the crash unlock mode remains active.
Cancellation of transport mode requires a Land Rover approved diagnostic system to be connected to the vehicle during pre-delivery inspection (PDI). See the PDI manual for more information.
