Removal and installation automatic transmission (V8i engine) (Discovery 1)

The automatic transmission, torque converter and transfer case are removed as an assembly from underneath the vehicle. To secure the automatic transmission to the jack, a holder is used, the drawings of which are shown in the figure.

1. Place the car on a lift.

2. Disconnect the battery.

3. Disconnect the fan diffuser from the radiator.

4. Disconnect the air hose from the resonance chamber.

5. Disconnect the stepper motor hose from the resonance chamber.

6. Disconnect the kick-down cable from the throttle lever and release the cable from the clips.

7. Release the two transmission ventilation hoses from the clips on the right rear engine lifting hook.

8. Remove the gearbox oil level dipstick.

9. In the passenger compartment: detach the gear shift lever cover from the console, remove the gear shift handle and cover.

10. Raise the car.

11. Drain the oil from the automatic transmission and transfer case. Replace the drain plugs.

12. Remove the exhaust system downpipe heat shield.

13. Disconnect the oxygen sensor connectors.

14. Remove the catalytic converter.

15. Remove the frame cross member under the automatic transmission.

16. Remove the speedometer cable heat shield from the transfer case.

17. Disconnect the speedometer cable and secure it to the side.

18. Mark the relative positions of the transfer case flanges and the drive shafts.

19. Disconnect and secure to the side the rear propeller shaft.

20. Disconnect and secure to the side the front propeller shaft.

21. Disconnect the muffler hanger fasteners and move the muffler to the side.

22. Disconnect the lower and side oil cooling hoses from the automatic transmission.

23. Release the hoses from the clips on the engine sump.

24. Plug the hoses and fittings.

25. Secure both hoses to the side.

26. Disconnect the shift cable from the automatic transmission control lever.

27. Disconnect the starter inhibit switch connector.

28. Install the automatic transmission holder on the jack.

29. Remove the two bolts from the rear cover of the transfer case.

30. Move the holder to the automatic transmission and secure the holder with the two unscrewed transfer case bolts.

31. Adjust the height of the holder to accommodate the weight of the automatic transmission.

32. Unscrew the fasteners of the right transfer case support to the frame.

33. Unscrew the fasteners of the left transfer case support to the frame. Release the speedometer sensor bracket.

34. Unscrew the fastening of the right support cushion.

35. Lower the holder until the parking brake drum moves away from the bottom of the vehicle. Be careful not to damage any engine parts.



36. Disconnect the parking brake cable.

37. Release the parking brake clip.

38. Move the cable to the side.

39. Disconnect the temperature sensor and differential lock switch connectors on the transfer case.

40. Cut off the plastic ties securing the wires to the ventilation pipes.

41. Remove the access plug on the torque converter housing.

42. Turn the crankshaft until the torque converter clutch mounting bolt is aligned with the access plug.

43. Mark the relative position of the torque converter drive coupling halves.

44. Loosen the torque converter drive half coupling mounting bolt.

45. While turning the engine shaft, unscrew the remaining bolts securing the half couplings.

46. Disconnect the dipstick tube from the automatic transmission housing.

47. Remove the tube and plug the automatic transmission nipple.

48. Place a temporary support under the engine.

49. Unscrew the fasteners of the torque converter housing from the engine.

50. Move the automatic transmission away from the engine.

51. Lower the holder and remove the box from under the car.

52. Installation is carried out in reverse order.
