Removal and installation automatic transmission (Tdi engine) (Discovery 1)

The automatic transmission, torque converter and transfer case are removed as an assembly from underneath the vehicle. To secure the automatic transmission to the jack, a holder is used, the drawings of which are shown in the figure.

Move the transfer case lever to the downshift position.

2. Remove the handle and the transfer case lever cover.

3. Disconnect the battery.

4. Remove the sound insulation from the valve cover and intake manifold.

5. Left-hand drive vehicles only: Disconnect the brake fluid level sensor connector from the brake fluid reservoir.

6. Release the wire bundle from the clips on the engine compartment partition.

7. Disconnect the ventilation tubes of both boxes from the cylinder head.

8. Disconnect the kick-down cable from the fuel injection pump.

9. Drain the coolant.

10. Disconnect the upper radiator hose.

11. Disconnect the turbocharger hose from the charge air cooler.

12. Remove the starter heat shield.

13. Remove the starter.

14. Mark the relative position of the torque converter drive coupling halves through the starter installation hole.

15. Loosen the torque converter clutch mounting bolts. To access the bolts, rotate the engine crankshaft.

16. Raise the car on a lift.

17. Drain the oil from both boxes.

18. Disconnect the speedometer cable.

19. Remove the rear propeller shaft.

20. Disconnect the front propeller shaft from the transfer case and secure it to the side.

21. Remove the exhaust pipe.

22. Disconnect the muffler suspension brackets and move the muffler to the side.



23. Disconnect the oil cooling hoses from the automatic transmission.

24. Plug the hoses and fittings.

25. Unscrew the bolt securing the support bracket to the engine sump, move the automatic transmission oil cooling hoses to the side.

26. Disconnect the control cable from the automatic transmission lever.

27. Disconnect the starter inhibit switch connector.

28. Disconnect the parking brake cable.

29. Disconnect the differential lock switch connector.

30. Remove the two lower bolts of the transfer case input bearing housing.

31. Secure the automatic transmission holder to the jack.

32. Move the holder to the automatic transmission and secure it with the bolts removed from the transfer case.

33. Disconnect the transfer case supports.

34. Remove the support cross member.

35. Lower the gearbox to provide access to the upper components.

36. Remove the right automatic transmission support.

37. Cut off the plastic clamp securing the wires to the ventilation pipes.

38. Unscrew the fastening of the dipstick tube to the torque converter housing.

39. Remove the dipstick tube from the automatic transmission and plug the fitting.

40. Place a temporary support under the engine.

41. Disconnect the kick-down cable support bracket from the torque converter housing.

42. Unscrew the two upper torque converter housing mounting bolts.

43. Loosen the torque converter housing mounting nuts and move the automatic transmission away from the engine.

44. Secure the torque converter to prevent it from falling out.

45. Lower the jack and remove the automatic transmission from under the car.

46. Installation is carried out in reverse order.
