  • Front axle and final drive — description

        0
The front axle beam is welded with a removable hypoid main gear and differential, located to the right relative to the vehicle axis.

The front steering wheels are driven by constant velocity joint half shafts. Models with ABS have a slightly different design of the upper part of the steering "kingpin" (position 20 in the figure) to accommodate the wheel speed sensor. Both parts of the kingpin rotate on tapered bearings 19 and 25.

Note: in this design there is no kingpin as such. Here the term "kingpin" refers to both (upper and lower) pivot pins

The differential, kingpin, and wheel hubs are lubricated individually, with the lubrication cavities separated by seals 7 and 8. On later models, the kingpin hub is lubricated with grease, and the steering knuckle housing is painted black and lacks a drain plug or oil level plug.
