Removal
1. Disconnect the ground cable from the battery. For more information, refer to Specification
2. Secure the hood in the service position.
3. Raise and support the vehicle.
4. Drain the cooling system. For more information, refer to Draining/Filling Coolant and Bleeding the Cooling System (10/26/01)

5. Drain the engine oil. For more information, refer to Draining and Filling Engine Oil (12.60.05)

NOTE: Early models require partial release of the fuel rail to allow removal of the intake manifold.
Remove the intake manifold. For more information, refer to Intake Manifold (30.15.02)
7. Remove the battery tray. For more information, refer to Battery Shelf (76.10.30)
8. Disconnect the 2 ECM electrical connectors.

9. Release the wiring harness from the manifold.
- Release the 2 clamps
- Move the wiring harness to the side

10. Remove the accessory drive belt. For more information, refer to Accessory Drive Belt (86.10.03)
11. Remove the lower fan shroud. Release the 2 clamps of the lower cooling fan shroud.

12. Install the screen to protect the radiator core from damage.
13. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the generator. Disconnect the electrical connector.

14. Move the radiator support bracket to the side.
- Remove 3 bolts.
- Release the wiring harness clamp.
- Remove and discard the wire tie.

CAUTION: When performing this operation, the air conditioning system remains fully charged, so care must be taken when moving the unit to the side.
Move the air conditioning compressor support bracket to the side.
- Disconnect the air conditioning compressor electrical connector.
- Release the left electrical connector KS fastening clip.
- Remove 4 bolts.

16. Disconnect the electrical connector of the engine oil pressure (EOP) sensor.

17. Disconnect the engine ground wire. Unscrew the nut.

18. Disconnect the transmission cooling system pipes.
- Unscrew the nut.
- Move the part to the side.

19. Remove the EGR pipe. Loosen the EGR union nut and disconnect the pipe.

20. Make sure the wheels are in the straight-ahead position, then remove the upper clamp bolt. Discard the mounting bolt.
21. Remove the steering column universal joint clamp bolt. Discard the mounting bolt.
22. Release the upper steering column shaft fastening.
23. Release the fastening and remove the shaft assembly with the joint.

24. Remove the coolant pump hose.
- Move the part to the side.
- Release the clamp.

25. Disconnect the two engine oil cooler coolant hoses. Release the 2 clamps.

26. Remove the gearbox heat shield. Remove 4 bolts.

27. Disconnect the electrical connector of the left catalytic converter monitoring sensor. Release the heated oxygen sensor wiring harness from the bracket.
28. Disconnect the left catalytic converter from the exhaust manifold. Remove 2 bolts.

29. Disconnect the electrical connector of the right catalytic converter monitoring sensor. Release the heated oxygen sensor wiring harness from the bracket.
30. Disconnect the right catalytic converter from the exhaust manifold. Remove 2 bolts.

31. Disconnect the electrical connector of the engine oil temperature sensor.

32. Release the starter mount. Remove 2 bolts.

33. Release the wiring harness bracket. Unscrew the 2 nuts.

34. Disconnect the crankshaft position sensor (CKP) electrical connector.

35. Install the engine lifting device.
- Tighten the bolts (tightening torque 45 Nm).
- Tighten the nuts evenly and gradually. (tightening torque 25 Nm).

36. Release the flexible plate fastening.
- Turn the crankshaft to gain access to the mounting bolts.
- Remove 4 bolts.

37. Release the heat shield of the fuel line and purge line.
- Remove 2 bolts.
- Move the fuel line screen aside to gain access.

CAUTION: Support the engine. The engine will fall forward when the transmission is removed.
Remove the gearbox mounting bolts.
- Attach the lifting chains.
- Support the gearbox.
- Remove 8 bolts.

CAUTION: Make sure the torque converter remains attached to the transmission.
Remove the engine.
- Unscrew the 2 engine mount nuts.
- Remove the right engine mount.
- Raise the engine.
- With the help of a second mechanic, carefully remove the engine.

40. Install the torque converter holder.
