Oil pan seal — removal and installation (Freelander 1)

Dismantling

1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal.

2. Remove the engine soundproofing cover.

ENGINE KV6 - MODIFICATION K, Camshafts of the left cylinder head, Soundproofing engine casing.

3. Drain the oil from the engine.

MAINTENANCE, Engine Oil and Oil Filter - KV6.

4. Unscrew the 3 bolts securing the right mudguard panel and remove the panel.



5. Unscrew the 4 nuts securing the oil cooling heat exchanger to the bracket and move the heat exchanger to the side.



6. Unscrew the 2 bolts securing the oil dipstick housing to the cylinder block.



7. Press the shoulders of the oil dipstick retainer and remove the oil dipstick from the pan.



8. Remove the 3 bolts securing the transfer case bracket to the pan.



9. In the sequence shown in the figure, remembering the position, unscrew the 10 bolts securing the lower part of the tray to the upper part.

10. Using a mallet, lightly tap the bottom cover of the pan to knock the cover off the sealant layer and remove it.

CAUTION: Do not use a lever to separate the lower tray from the upper tray.

Installation

1. Wipe the mating surfaces of the lower oil pan cover and oil pan with a rag soaked in solvent. Do not use a metal scraper to clean the mating surfaces.

2. Apply a continuous bead of STC 4600 sealant 2mm thick along the centre of the mating flange and spread it into an even layer using a roller trowel.

ATTENTION: Assembly of prepared parts must be carried out immediately to prevent contamination of surfaces with applied sealant.

3. Install the bottom cover, screw in the bolts and gradually tighten them to a torque of 35 Nm in the sequence shown in the figure.

4. Screw in the three bolts securing the transfer case bracket to the pan and tighten them to a torque of 88 Nm.

5. Install the heat exchanger on the bracket, screw in the bolts and tighten them to a torque of 25 Nm.

6. Install the oil dipstick, screw in the bolt and tighten it to a torque of 9 Nm.

7. Install the mudguard panel and secure it with bolts.

8. Fill the engine with oil of the required grade up to the level mark.

9. Reinstall the engine soundproofing cover.

10. Connect the negative battery terminal.
